Gary and Williams Presented Three Individuals with the Making a Difference Award
Raleigh, NC – The Shaw University Homecoming Brunch and Reception was held on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 9:00 a.m., at the Sheraton Capital Center Hotel in Raleigh. Hosted by Shaw alumni attorneys Willie E. Gary, class of ‘71 and Lorenzo Williams, class of ’74.
Over 400 alumni, faculty, and friends of the University attended Shaw’s Homecoming Reception. This event also honored local legislators, business leaders, educators and clergy, who have made significant contributions to the community. Guests enjoyed live entertainment provided by the band Heart and Soul and a complimentary brunch. Attorneys Gary and Williams hosted the annual brunch as a thank you to Shaw University for playing an integral role in their success as trial attorneys.
This year Gary and Williams will recognized the following individuals with Making a Difference Awards:
- Phyliss Craig-Taylor: Dean, North Carolina Central University School of Law Durham, North Carolina
- Rev. Dr. Sir Walter Mack, Jr.: Pastor of Union Baptist Church, Winston Salem, North Carolina
- Senator Earline Parmon: District 32 Raleigh, North Carolina
Gary is no stranger to seeking justice. Gary and his legal team are known for taking on some of the nation’s most powerful corporate giants. In 2014, a jury awarded Gary and his legal team an unprecedented $23.6 billion verdict against RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company. In 1995, a jury awarded Gary and his legal team a record-breaking, half-billion dollars against one of the world’s largest funeral chains, The Loewen Group. In addition, Gary is noted for winning a $240 million jury verdict in Orange County against the Walt Disney Corporation for his clients who alleged that Disney stole their idea for a sports theme park. In 2001, a jury awarded Gary a $139.6 million verdict for the Maris Distributing Company against Anheuser Busch.
The Gary Foundation
Known for his philanthropic endeavors, Willie Gary and his wife, Gloria Gary, founded The Gary Foundation, which provides college scholarships to at-risk students who wish to attend college. The Gary’s have donated millions of dollars to help Historically Black Colleges and Universities – including their alma mater, Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
