CK Hoffler Announces Creation of the Willie Gary Fellowship Honoring the achievement of the legendary trial attorney at the Gate City Bar Judicial Section Awards Dinner
Atlanta, GA (January 7, 2019). In collaboration with the Gate City Bar Association- Judicial Section Chair, The Honorable Ronald B. Ramsey, Sr.; Attorney CK Hoffler announced the creation of a “Fast Track” fellowship in honor of her mentor, the legendary Willie Gary of Stuart Florida. Hoffler worked with Gary and his commercial and international litigation department for over 13 years. Gary and Hoffler have successfully litigated numerous large verdict cases in The State of Georgia and nationally. “Willie Gary is the most extraordinarily talented trial lawyer. I had the distinct honor of trying so many life-defining cases with him and learned so much about trial work and passion. He and his wife Gloria Gary are also caring philanthropists. Every year they give to children and young adults in need of support, scholarships, training and gifts through the Gary Foundation. So, it was only fitting for me to start this fellowship in his honor when I opened my new office in Buckhead.” Hoffler said.
For the 5th consecutive year, Hoffler has made available over $35,000 in scholarship monies for deserving Atlanta-based minority law students. “It was a tremendous honor for me to partner with the extraordinary Gate City Bar judges here in Atlanta,” said Hoffler. “Initially partnering with the Honorable Kimberly Esmond Adams and the Honorable Myra Dixon, who chaired the 2013 scholarship programming, I humbly accepted the opportunity to work this august organization. In collaboration with the Chick-Fil-A Foundation and various local law firms, we have given out close to $175,000 in scholarships over the past several years.”
Attorney Gary is a graduate of North Carolina Central University School of Law. Judge Ramsey also received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from North Carolina Central University. The institution is known for its commitment to the law and training some of today’s top lawyers. As Chairperson of the Judicial Section, Judge Ramsey’s vision to assist fledgling lawyers with the nuts and bolts of trial practice and law office management, led to the historic collaboration between Hoffler and the Judicial Section. “I always wanted to help young lawyers and students to get the best training possible. Willie Gary was legendary even during my undergraduate years and his accomplishments and stellar reputation as a trial lawyer over the years has left an indelible mark on me. So, this collaboration with one of his stellar proteges, CK Hoffler, is a blessing,” said Ramsey.
Recipients of the Willie Gary Fellowship will be exposed to every aspect of trial work including the operations and leadership of running of a law office. “Through the fellowship, a young lawyer will learn the importance of hard work, trial strategies and other pearls of wisdom—Willie Gary-style.” Hoffler teamed with Gary and represented thousands of clients who had been victims of negligence, discrimination and corporate injustice.
“I am honored to have this fellowship named after me,” said Gary. “CK Hoffler and I have a long-history of trying cases and breaking down barriers in the court room in seeking justice. As my law partner, she was my right-hand person on some of our toughest cases. She is one of the most tenacious and toughest lawyers I know. I look forward to helping some of these deserving recipients of the fellowship in any way that I can.”

Billion-dollar lawsuit filed against nursing home for repeated rape and sodomy of 84-year-old
Attorneys Willie E. Gary, Richard Banks and Larry A. Strauss seek justice for brutal assault on Ferguson, MO, great-grandmother
ST. LOUIS, MO –September 20, 2018 – When Colette Green had to place her 84-year-old mother Delores Green into a nursing home after the onset of Alzheimer’s in October 2011, she trusted Christian Care Home (CCH) would offer top notch care.
She did not expect her bedridden mother would be repeatedly raped and sodomized at the home.
She’s since learned that CCH, which is owned by Christian Women’s Benevolent Association, has a history of abuses and low ratings in government reviews.
Famed Attorney Willie E. Gary and senior associate Larry A. Strauss of Gary, Williams, Parenti, Watson and Gary, PLLC, and Richard Banks of Banks & Associates, LLC, filed a billion-dollar lawsuit against CCH for its gross negligence in the operation of the nursing home facility, and complete failure to provide adequate protection for residents such as Mrs. Green. Also named as defendants are Riley-Spence Properties – a company which provides management services at the nursing home, and the owner of the property, CWBA Cedar Lake.
Colette Green visits her mother daily. During one such visit at the defendant’s facility in August 2018, she noticed unusual bruising and swelling around her mother’s rectum and vaginal area while giving her mother a bath. She reported this to the nursing home director, who claimed she would investigate the matter. Despite numerous additional complaints to the director, Colette Green’s pleas for help went unanswered.
Upon returning the next day, Colette Green became increasingly alarmed because there were additional bruises, more swelling, and no answers. At wits end, she removed her mother from CCH and took her to DePaul Hospital, where doctors examined her and determined that her mother had been repeatedly raped and sodomized.
“This lawsuit was filed to help shine a light on the under-reported evil of elder abuse in nursing homes throughout the country,” Gary said. “It is our hope that no other seniors will have to suffer the way Mrs. Green is suffering, as this level of depravity reaches an epic low.”
Based on the most recent United States Census report and elder abuse statistics, approximately 3.2 million U.S. citizens live in nursing homes. Of those 3.2 million, there are more than 2 million reports of elder abuse every year.
“It is disgusting to think that someone could do this to anyone – especially a helpless 84-year-old,” said Kyle Green, one of Delores Green’s sons. “Our family is grieving because our mother was abused, raped, and tortured. She has dementia and Alzheimer’s, and had to suffer in silence because she could not cry out for help. She is as innocent as a newborn baby, and equally helpless.”
Delores Green is the mother of 6 children, a grandmother to 14, and great-grandmother to 21.
Gary and his legal team have vowed to fight for justice not only for Mrs. Green, but for the millions of other seniors or those with disabilities – mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers trapped in nursing care who do not have a voice, or the strength, to fight for themselves.
“We are here to be a voice for the voiceless, and provide hope to the helpless,” Gary said.
Gary is no stranger to seeking justice. Gary and his legal team are known for taking on some of the nation’s most powerful corporate giants. In 1995, a jury awarded Gary and his legal team a record-breaking half-billion dollars against one of the world’s largest funeral chains, The Loewen Group. He won a $240 million jury verdict against the Walt Disney Corporation in Orlando for theft of his client’s idea for a sports theme park. In 2001, a jury awarded Gary a $139.6 million verdict for the Maris Distributing Company against Anheuser Busch. In 2014, he obtained a record-breaking $23.6 billion-dollar wrongful death verdict against R.J. Reynolds American Tobacco. He also obtained a $20 million verdict – one of the largest wrongful death verdicts ever in North Carolina – against Horizon Coach Lines for the estate of a man killed in a bus crash in 2013.
